A modern day "Superman"

If you were to ask any small child who their hero was, many would say, “Superman!” or “Batman!” or “Ironman!” These animated characters have become fantasized heroes and role models for many children in the recent years. What is it about these superhero figures that children love or admire? Some examples are, they are strong, they are fast, they have cool gadgets and a cool bat-mobile. Other characteristics could be they are smart, they are brave, have courage, and protect the city people from evil. Sarcastically, if only there were real men in the world like these heroes! As a matter of fact, there is. These men are our teachers, professors, bosses, taxi drivers, and even our very own fathers. Our own dads can be seen as a modern day, real life Superman. Most times a father figure is not always present in a home and the world views that a mother is more important. I want to share my witness that  marriage between a man and a woman is necessary for the benefit of children. Both roles are just as important and essential.

I read in an article, “DATA SHOW BENEFITS OF FATHERS” by Father John Flynn, LC, 2016 from an initiative for men by Knights of Columbus. The article talks about the importance a father’s role has on his children. Children look to their father as an example, a role model, and a leader. His influence has a lasting effect on their lives. Father Flynn comments, “An active fatherhood role not only reduced the frequency of behavioral problems in boys and psychological problems in young women, but it also had a positive effect on cognitive development, along with decreasing delinquency and economic disadvantage in low-income families…There is evidence to indicate that father engagement positively affects the social, behavioral, psychological and cognitive outcomes of children.” Fathers have a unique responsibility and can provide the necessary needs for their families whether, physical, emotional, economical, or spiritual.

From personal experiences, I would have to say, having a dad that is involved in my life means the world to me! Maybe that's a little bias to say but I really have learned to love and appreciate the sacrifice my dad has made and continues to make for our family. He works so hard, tries to make time for all of the kids' busy schedules, sporting events, piano recitals, scout or 4-H projects, and still has time for himself and spending time with mom. In another related article to the one shared above, by Ken Canfield, “WHEN DAD LOVES MOM, CHILDREN BENEFIT,” a mother has an important role as well. Fathers and mothers are there to support each other, provide for a family, and work as equal partners. Canfield perfectly stated, “Even if you were some kind of Superman, you could still only supply your children with a masculine perspective of the world, valuable as it is. It takes a woman – ideally their mother – to provide the deep feminine input that rounds out their world and opens up more of the wonders of adulthood.” What good is a man without a woman? When a father loves and respects his wife, their children’s needs are more fully met. They feel safer and protected in their home.

With all respect, thank you fathers. Thank you mothers. Thank you moms, dads, grandparents, aunts and uncles. To all who take the role of being a parent or guardian, remember we have a divine responsibility and role to care for those around us-those in our families, siblings, friends, and loved ones. Do not underestimate your power, ability, and influence you can have on someone. Influence all to do good.
